Sexiest Man Alive 2009

I’m sure you are wondering why I am writing about the sexiest man alive 2009 in my design news and updates section.

The answer is simple, “I wanted to talk about sex and advertising”.

Advertising is no stranger to the world of sex. Movies often sell out based solely on the sex factor alone. Look at the “New Moon” movie that is coming out. A top contendor for the sexiest man alive contest, Robert Pattinson, is in that movie. It has more buzz than a Denver high times convention. Again, its based off of the “Sex” factor. Men go to see sexy women and women go to see sexy men. This fact was established long ago when the censors had to really start monitoring what was considered inappropriate even back in the early years of cinema.

So what does this have to do with the “Sexiest man alive 2009 award“? Look at who always wins. It is always a movie star. Why is that. That answer is also simple. Advertising and branding. Advertising is not always a logo on a billboard, but even it that were the case it would still hold true here. This years winner, “Johnny Depp” was many billboards and had many commercials pushing him as a brand this year. His recent hit movie, Public Enemies, really helped him get out there with all the free publicity and face time on billboards across the great USA. He has undoubtedly had just as much billboard and screen time as any other other male actor if not more this year.

The Johnny Depp brand is not new to any of us. Yes, you heard me right, I called it the Johnny Depp brand. I say that because we don’t really know what Johnny depp is like as a person in the quiet of his own home. What we do know is what we see on TV and in the media. If he were just a male model in a magazine every now and then, he probably would not have even been considered for the sexiest man alive 2009 award. Publicity requires being in front of the press and the public just alike.

I recently started a “Most popular man alive website“. I didn’t start this publicity based website because I actually believe myself to be the most popular man alive. I’m pretty sure Johnny Depp also didn’t play a role in “Public Enemies” because he thought he would win Sexiest man alive 2009. The point is you have to get out there and cause a stir to make things happen. Stars need facetime to get into the memories of the public who adore them. Without that Facetime they’re not going to be remembered.

This principal goes well beyond the trappings of a sexiest man alive contest or even a sexiest woman alive contest. This is really just basic advertising and marketing. These same principals apply to business and branding for products and services worldwide. Coca-cola is famous because you see them everywhere. Other drinks are as good or better, but you remember their logo and their ads.

My favorite new font

Some have said that my obsession with fonts goes way too far. My wife is sick to death of hearing me spout out font names when walk through stores or watch commercials. I can’t help it. After sitting through hundreds of hours of design time and having to pick that oh-so-perfect font for the ad or product I have become jaded to some and in love with others.

Fonts are like colors to me. They add just the right touch to make things work.

At the same time, they can break a project or design just as easily. Having the right font in the right place can make all the difference in the world. I never thought that I would say or be doing this, but my favorite is the windows vista standard font. It is really a remake of an older font called frutiger. Ironically I never really paid too much attention to fruitiger but the guys that worked on Segoe UI and the associated versions did a killer job of cleaning it just so subtly so that it stands out as one of my new all time favorites. The other reason that I am so in love with it is that I can use it in website designs and it will probably work just fine. If it doesn’t I can just have a backup of the good old Arial ready to step in and help in its absence. Segoe UI is a standard windows 7 and Windows Vista font. As the world is now moving very quickly into vista and 7 I can feel safe in assigning it a role in website design.
